International telescope project will have Calgary

When complete, it will be powerful enough to measure traces of radiation from the beginning of time.

A giant radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array, will be 100 times more powerful than any similar piece of technology - and almost immeasurably more powerful than the famous telescope used by the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, SETI.

It is a huge science project that will span a continent and devote a full square kilometre of receivers to scanning the universe for everything from the origins of the universe, to clues about the existence of intelligent life.

And one of the elders of the project will be a University of Calgary professor named Russ Taylor, who was appointed to represent Canada on SKA’s international board.

“It’s so big, that’s why there’s a collaboration of a number of countries to build it,” Taylor said.
